Historic Clay District

The Historic Clay District is the former site of many of Canada's top clay factories, including Medalta Potteries, National Porcelain, Hycroft China, and Alberta Clay Products. This magnificent era all comes to life in a contemporary living/working museum.

Medalta Potteries National Historic Site.

The Medalta Potteries once produced more than 75% of Canada's pottery. Now this site is an interactive museum dedicated to preserving the area's industrial past. Visitors have a unique opportunity to enter one of the rare circular kilns, explore the original factory, and get inside details about the many clay products that were once produced in the region. Medicine Hat Schlachter Collection

The A. T. (Tony) Schlachter Collection.

Anthony Timothy (Tony) Schlachter was a farmer who grew wheat and raised cattle on the land known locally as "the Flamme farm" in the 1950s. It was here that he discovered a stoneware chicken waterer, his collection's first piece. Over a period spanning 50 years, he uncovered an incredible amount of Southeastern Alberta pottery, which he donated to the Friends of Medalta Society in 2008. This collection, which features 2,500 pieces, is now on permanent exhibit at the Medalta Potteries site. For more information, visit www.medalta.org/collection/Schlachter.html
